With the European Championship, Germany is currently the football mecca. Millions watched the tournament on TV on Saturday – without the DFB team.

The European Football Championship in Germany is attracting millions of viewers to their TV sets on the first regular day of the tournament. One day after the outstanding opening match between the DFB team and Scotland (final score 5:1) with more than 22 million viewers on ZDF, 9.7 million people were watching the 9 p.m. match between Italy and Albania (final score 2:1) on Saturday evening. This is according to the official data from AGF Video Research in collaboration with GfK. This meant a market share of 40.1 percent for the broadcaster ARD. And the 6 p.m. match between Spain and Croatia (final score 3:0) was watched by 7.7 million viewers on ARD, with a market share of as much as 44.3 percent.

This meant that the competition on Saturday evening, as on Friday, had no chance against the king of football. ZDF showed “Erzgebirgskrimi – Der letzte Bissen” at 8:15 p.m. and only attracted 5.3 million viewers to their TV sets. Incidentally, the game at 3 p.m. from the German group, Hungary against Switzerland (final score 1:3), was not broadcast on linear TV, but only shown on the Telekom streaming service Magenta TV.

Today the European Championship continues on RTL and Das Erste

The European Championships will of course continue on TV on Sunday. At 3 p.m., the private broadcaster RTL will show the match between Poland and the Netherlands from Hamburg. Later, ZDF will take over again and will broadcast the match between Slovenia and Denmark from Stuttgart at 6 p.m. and the match between Serbia and England from Gelsenkirchen at 9 p.m. The German team will not be in action again until Wednesday: the match between Germany and Hungary, also in Stuttgart, will kick off at 6 p.m. In addition to Magenta TV, which will broadcast all of the European Championships matches, Das Erste will also be broadcasting live from the stadium on linear television.
