Group B: Netherlands firmly in place, France on a scoring spree

  • Netherlands – Ireland 1-0

The Dutch took the final step with one lap to go. Coach Ronald Koeman’s team defeated Ireland 1-0 in Amsterdam and is therefore assured of second place. Greece could still draw level on Tuesday with a win against France, who have already qualified, but the Dutch are ahead in a direct comparison with the Greeks. The match winner against the Irish was Wout Weghorst. The Hoffenheim striker scored in the near corner in the 11th minute after a quick counterattack.

  • France – Gibraltar 14:0

The fans in Nice experienced a night for the history books. The runner-up world champion, who was already a participant in the European Championship, swept the outsiders from Gibraltar out of the stadium with a score of 14-0. It is the French’s biggest victory of all time. The previous record was a 10-0 win against Azerbaijan in 1995. Kylian Mbappé scored three times, Kingsley Coman and Olivier Giroud shone as double goalscorers. Warren Zaire-Emery set another record. The 17-year-old was the youngest debutant and, with his goal to make it 3-0, the youngest goalscorer in France. As he scored, he was hit hard in the ankle by Ethan Santos. The Gibraltar player was shown the red card and Zaïre-Emery had to be substituted.

Group D: Croatia in a good position

The Croats have qualification for the 2024 European Championship in Germany in their own hands. In the long-distance duel with Wales for second place in Group D behind already qualified Turkey, the World Cup third-placed team celebrated a 2-0 victory in Latvia on Saturday. Lovro Majer (7th) and Andrej Kramaric (16th) made the difference early with their goals. Thanks to the victory, Croatia is 2 points ahead of the Welsh with one round to go. With a home win against Armenia at the end, participation in the European Championship is perfect.

Meanwhile, Wales can no longer get the European Championship ticket on their own. Robert Page’s team couldn’t get past a 1-1 draw against Armenia in Yerevan. After conceding an early goal by Lucas Zelarayan (5th), the British equalized in stoppage time in the first half with an own goal from Nair Tiknizyan. With a threesome, the Welsh could have completed qualification with a win in their last game against Turkey. Now they have to hope for a mistake by the Croats against the Armenians.
