Group J:
- Portugal – Luxembourg 9:0
Portugal continues to march undeterred towards qualification for the 2024 finals. Coach Roberto Martinez’s team clinched their sixth win against Luxembourg with a 9-0 home win in their sixth game and celebrated the biggest win in the association’s history. The Portuguese also have a goal difference of 24:0. Luxembourg, a recently strong team, was a guest in Faro. Coach Luc Holtz’s team won 3 times in a row. Against the Portuguese, it was clear early on that this series would be broken. After a brace each from Goncalo Inacio and Goncalo Ramos, it was 4-0 for the hosts at the break. Diogo Jota (2), Ricardo Horta, Otavio and Joao Felix increased in the second half. The Luxembourgers had already suffered a 6-0 defeat against Portugal in their home game. They remain in third place with 10 points.
- Slovakia – Liechtenstein 3-0
Slovakia is 3 points ahead of Luxembourg. Against Liechtenstein, the Slovaks started like fire brigades and led 3-0 after just 6 minutes. The 1-0 came after just 8 (!) seconds. A complete false start for the principalities. The game was decided early on and Liechtenstein’s 19th defeat in a row was clear. After the furious start, the game leveled off and no further goals were scored.
- Iceland – Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0
A late goal gave Iceland their second win of the current campaign in Reykjavík. Alfred Finnbogason scored in stoppage time to make it 1-0. Before that, the guests had dominated the game, but were unable to put any of their 17 shots into the goal. When Bosnia-Herzegovina risked even more in the final phase, the Icelanders achieved their lucky success. Both teams now have 6 points, the gap to a qualifying place is 7 points.
Group D: Croatia wins thanks to Kramaric
- Armenia – Croatia 0:1
Andrej Kramaric shot Croatia to the top of Group D and brought them a step closer to the finals in Germany. The 32-year-old scored the 1-0 winning goal in the 13th minute against Armenia in Yerevan. The Croatians’ victory was well deserved and should have been better given their overwhelming superiority. The World Cup third place replaced Turkey at the top. Both teams have 10 points, although Croatia has played one game less. Armenia is only third in the table with 7 points.
Wales is level on points with the Armenians. The Welsh won 2-0 against Latvia, who still had no points. Aaron Ramsey scored the goals with a penalty in the 29th minute and David Brooks in the 96th minute.
