Group G: Hungary wins the European Championship ticket

For a long time in Sofia it looked as if Hungary, like Switzerland the day before, would miss out on their first chance at the European Championship ticket. The Hungarians took a 1-0 lead (10th) and would have still qualified for the EURO even after the equalizer in the 24th minute. But after a very merciful penalty whistle and converted by Kiril Despodov, the guests were 1-2 behind in the 79th minute. But Fortuna meant well for Hungary. The indicated 6 additional minutes had already expired when Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai took a final free kick into the penalty area. There he didn’t find a teammate’s head, but he did find the head of Alex Petkov, who extended the ball into his own goal to make it 2-2. After that it was over, the Hungarians’ third European Championship qualification in a row was a fact and the guests’ celebration was correspondingly exuberant.

  • Montenegro – Lithuania 2-0

Group F: A lot to do for Staubli

The game in Baku had no sporting value. The European Championship train has long since departed for both Azerbaijan and Sweden (Belgium and Austria have secured tickets for the EURO). From a Swiss perspective, the game was still special. Because with Esther Staubli, a Swiss woman arbitrated a men’s European Championship qualifier for the first time. The 44-year-old from Bern couldn’t complain about the lack of work. The home team scored twice in the first 6 minutes of the game, and after the break, Staubli sent off Azerbaijan’s Bahlul Mustafazade after a rude emergency brake foul. And shortly before the end, the Swiss and her team witnessed how Emin Mahmudov scored the wonderful final point almost from his own half of the pitch.

Group A: Spain about to win the group

Spain took a big step towards winning the group thanks to a safe success in Cyprus. Because the Scots, who have also already qualified for Germany, only played 2-2 in Georgia, the lead of the Iberians in second place is 2 points before the last game. Servette keeper Joël Mall had to reach behind himself three times by the 28th minute. Only 16-year-old Lamine Yamal scored the 1-0 in a skilful manner. With a quarter of an hour to go, Cyprus managed to score a consolation goal.
