  • Croatia returns to winning ways in the European Championship qualifying group D against Armenia and wins the European Championship ticket.
  • Wales draw at home against Turkey, but even a win wouldn’t have been enough.
  • In Group B, the Netherlands celebrates a landslide victory, while France is surprised by Greece.

Group D: Croatia is at the EURO

  • Croatia – Armenia 1-0

In the last European Championship qualifying game, the 2018 runner-up world champion jumped on the direct European Championship bandwagon. This was thanks to a narrow victory in Zagreb against Armenia – after two defeats in a row (against Wales and Turkey). The hero of the evening was Osasuna’s goalscorer Ante Budimir, who was responsible for the only goal shortly before half-time with his head and thus scored for Croatia for the first time in the European Championship qualification.

For a long time, Wales were in the front at home against Turkey, who had already qualified. But even a win would not have been enough for the Welsh to qualify directly due to Croatia’s home success. Neco Williams gave the home team the lead after seven minutes with a beautiful shot. Yusuf Yazici equalized with a penalty in the 70th minute.

Group B: France loses its first point

France almost got caught in the last game. A remarkable long-range goal from Youssouf Fofana a quarter of an hour before the end saved the French, who had been flawless so far in this European Championship qualification, at least a draw. After the first 45 minutes, Didier Deschamps’ team was a length ahead thanks to a goal from a tight angle by Randal Kolo Muani (42′). After the break, the Greeks in Athens turned the game in their favor within five minutes. What was particularly worth seeing was Anastasios Bakasetas’ direct pass to make it 1-1 in the 56th minute.

Three days after the 0:14 dismantling in France, football dwarf Gibraltar met the second nation in this group that had already qualified for the EURO. The Gibraltarians only lost 3-0 in the first leg against the Netherlands. In the second leg on the south coast of Spain, the spell was broken after ten minutes and Calvin Stengs’ first of three goals that evening. Before the half-time whistle the goals made it 0:2 and 0:3. After Stengs’ brace (50th/62nd), Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo was also able to enjoy a sense of achievement.
