After silver at the European Championships last year in Östersund and bronze at the World Championships in Ottawa in the spring, the Swiss curlers have once again won precious metal at the European Championships in Aberdeen. Yannick Schwaller, Benoît Schwarz-van Berkel, Sven Michel and Pablo Lachat retained the upper hand in a nerve-wracking game for third place against Italy with 5:4 after the extra end.
In the 10th end, with the advantage of the last stone, the Italians were only able to score one point to equalize 4:4. This meant that the starting position for Switzerland was also favorable. Italy had to risk everything – and lost. A four-man team brought victory to CC Geneva.
Retornaz with unusual weaknesses
After a concentrated start and a 2-1 lead at the break, the Swiss managed to steal a stone in the 6th end. They benefited from a failed double take-out attempt by Geneva-born Italian skip Joël Retornaz. However, with a two-man game, the Italians immediately equalized to make it 3-3 and heralded the exciting final phase.
The Swiss lost the semi-final against Scotland 4:7 that morning. The host and Sweden will fight for the gold medal on Saturday (from 3:00 p.m. on the SRF live stream). For the Italians, the European Championship ends in bitter disappointment: they dominated the round robin and won all 9 games.
