The Prime Minister is due to debate with Jordan Bardella, head of the National Rally list, Thursday evening, during a televised debate. The issue is crucial for both candidates: encouraging voters to vote for Valérie Hayer for one and getting out of the position of the eternal opponent for the other.

Wednesday evening during a meeting in Mayenne, the Prime Minister tackled environmentalists by defending the environmental record of the majority: less 5.8% of greenhouse gas emissions between 2022 and 2023. This Thursday, Gabriel Attal will debate this time in the presence of Jordan Bardella. They face each other for the sixth time. These two debaters, who are completely opposite, have a lot to lose.

A major test

Credited with more than 30% of voting intentions in the polls, Jordan Bardella approaches this debate with the label of favorite. This position has so far encouraged him to avoid taking risks which he will have to avoid this Thursday evening against Gabriel Attal.

Seasoned to televised debates, the duel against the Prime Minister nevertheless represents a major test. It gives him a certain stature but could also return him to the status of eternal opponent. Gabriel Attal should thus insist on the lack of experience of the National Rally in power to try to disqualify his speech by entering the arena.

Last majority card

The tenant of rue de Varenne also takes his risk by being forced by Emmanuel Macron to debate with Jordan Bardella. There, despite his initial reluctance, Gabriel Attal appears as the majority’s last card to try to save Valérie Hayer’s campaign.

Comfortable face-to-face, the Prime Minister will nevertheless have to endorse Macronie’s record for seven years. A difficult position to assume because in the event of a defeat on June 9, the majority leader will also be accountable for the result.
