The art-house hit “Triangle of Sadness” was named best film of the year at the European Film Awards.

The European Film Awards were presented in the Icelandic capital Reykjavík. This year’s art house hit “Triangle of Sadness” was honored as the best film of the year. Three other trophies also went to the work of Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund (48), which was honored as best director and for his screenplay. The German director Margarethe von Trotta (80) received the award for her life’s work.

“Triangle of Sadness” big winner at the European Film Awards

The European Film Awards are the equivalent of the Oscars. For the first time in three years, the ceremony took place without restrictions due to the corona pandemic. “Triangle of Sadness” director Östlund dedicated his trophies to his leading actress Charlbi Dean (1990-2022), who died in the summer after a sudden illness. The Croatian actor Zlatko Burić (69), who plays a Russian magnate in the satire, was awarded best actor. “Triangle of Sadness” received the Palme d’Or for best picture at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Margarethe von Trotta receives a lifetime achievement award

The Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps (39) was honored as best actress for her portrayal of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary (1837-1898) in the feminist historical drama “Corsage”. Margaret von Trotta, who was honored in Reykjavík for her life’s work, is only the third woman to receive this honor at the European Film Awards. Von Trotta began her career as an actress and stood in front of the camera for Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-1982) and her longtime husband Volker Schlöndorff (83), for example. She then switched to directing and was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1981 for her film “Die bleierne Zeit”.
