The time has finally come – the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany starts in a few weeks. The home European Championship is the first major football tournament in the country after the 2006 World Cup. This means that the German team will of course be there again.

After the early exit from the last tournaments, German football is hoping for a much better performance. The tournament will take place from June 14th to July 14th. The opening match will be played on June 14th at 9pm between Germany and Scotland. The match will be played in Munich.

Countdown to kick-off of the European Football Championship

The good news first: You can watch the opening game and many other matches, including all of the German national football team’s games, on free TV. However, if you want to see all of the games, you have to pay. Similar to club football competitions, several providers now share the broadcast of the tournament.

Which channel is showing the European Championship games in Germany?

You can only watch all 51 matches of the tournament on Magenta TV, Telekom’s TV service. Magenta TV requires a subscription. Prices start at 10 euros per month. You can watch 34 of the 51 matches for free on ARD or ZDF. This includes all German matches, the opening match, the semi-finals and the final. The national team’s matches will be shown alternately on the two channels. The broadcaster RTL has also secured the rights for 12 more matches.

* Netzwelt may receive a commission from the provider for links on the website.

Who will show the World Cup games in Austria and Switzerland?

As in the previous year, ServusTV and ORF share the broadcasting rights for the 2024 European Championship. The former has the rights for 31 of 51 games and will show, among other things, all of the Austrians’ games, the opening game, the semi-finals and the final. The remaining games are with ORF. The situation is less complicated in Switzerland. All games will be shown there on SRF.

Can I access content on foreign TV via VPN?

As usual, in most cases it is possible to access content from media libraries in other countries via a VPN. If you want to watch all World Cup games broadcast by other countries for free from Germany, you can simply use a VPN to connect to Swiss servers and access the SRF media library. The same also works perfectly from Austria and Switzerland for the ARD and ZDF media libraries.

Of course, this approach also works in other countries with freely accessible broadcasts. But remember that you are in a legal grey area here.

Where can I see the highlights?

The highlights of the games are also summarized on the public broadcasters and on RTL. There you can see all the goals and the most important goals in the media libraries or on other social media channels such as YouTube.

Where can I follow the European Championship on the radio?

You’ll be out and about during the games, but still want to watch all the German games? That’s no problem, of course. For the 2024 European Championship, it’s likely that ARD will provide a live broadcast in its audio library. This can then be accessed online. In addition, some local and private radio stations will certainly offer an EM program at irregular intervals. It’s best to ask your local radio station about this.
