A few hours after Thierry Breton’s resignation, the Élysée announced that it was proposing the resigning Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stéphane Séjourné, to become European Commissioner.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday proposed his resigning Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné as European Commissioner “focused on the issues of industrial and technological sovereignty and European competitiveness”, following the resounding resignation of Thierry Breton, the Élysée announced.

An international experience

Stéphane Séjourné was “president of the Renew group in the European Parliament during the previous legislature and meets all the required criteria. His European commitment will allow him to fully support this sovereignty agenda”, adds the presidency.

“Since the French Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2022 and his second speech at the Sorbonne in April 2024, the President of the Republic (Emmanuel Macron) has always defended France obtaining a key portfolio of European Commissioner, focused on the issues of industrial and technological sovereignty and European competitiveness,” underlines the Élysée.

Emmanuel Macron also thanks Thierry Breton, “a remarkable European Commissioner” who has “strongly contributed to advancing a policy of European sovereignty in the digital fields (DSA/DMA), support for the European industrial and technological defense base as well as in favor of the resilience of the European Union’s single market during the Covid crisis.”
