Europeans are reluctant to cap the price of Russian gas

There is consensus on the exceptional drain on the income of low-cost electricity producers.

The objective of the meeting of European energy ministers on Friday in Brussels was to have an in-depth discussion on the proposals put on the table by the Commission in recent days. And, if need be, to begin to discard those which aroused too much debate. This has not been the case despite everyone’s desire to act quickly to relieve European citizens and companies whose energy bills are soaring.

Indeed, a mandate has been given to the Commission to refine all the leads presented in recent days by Ursula von der Leyen. They include the drop in electricity consumption during the day’s peaks, the drain on the astronomical revenues of low-cost energy producers (nuclear and renewables), the taxation of the superprofits of gas and oil groups, the capping of price of gas purchased from third countries and the creation of emergency liquidity instruments for companies purchasing…
