The LR mayor of Cannes David Lisnard was the guest of Europe 1 this Wednesday. At the microphone of Sonia Mabrouk, the president of the Association of Mayors of France returned to the importance of the European elections which will take place next year. But no question for him to present himself there: “I will go to the end of my mandate as mayor”.
More than a year after the presidential election, France is about to experience a new campaign: that of the Europeans. Essential elections, which are slowly preparing within the hexagonal political landscape. But while the left is divided on the interest of presenting itself under a single Nupes list, the right is more discreet on the subject for the moment.
A first step towards renewal?
Invited this Wednesday morning, the mayor Les Républicains de Cannes David Lisnard assures him: “the European elections can be the first step towards a new hope carried by the right and the center”, even though the Republican party has fractured around the issue of pensions.
“Europe should no longer be a means of hindrance, but a means of power for France” continues the president of the Association of Mayors of France (AMF). “We (Les Républicains ndlr) must carry this European ambition. And rather than wanting to force us to put up flags on the pediments of town halls, we should stop insulting our partners like Italy […] We must no longer think that we have to step over these elections, turn around and say it’s not for us. We are able to have a very strong corpus and with my New Energy party, I will propose, I hope in September, a strong corpus on this”, he explains.
“Don’t give up along the way”
But there is no question for David Lisnard of leaving his post as mayor of Cannes to try the European adventure. “Today, you can no longer stand for an election like the Europeans and keep your mandate as mayor. And I said that I will go through to the end of my mandate as mayor”, notes the president of the AMF.
“Certainly, I thought about trying the European elections. In any case, I thought about it, because it is a good forum for making your convictions heard. But you have to recreate civic confidence and I think that the confidence also means saying things clearly. In 2020, when I ran for the municipal elections, I did not run to then go to the European elections and give up along the way”, he concludes.
