  • Peter Urban was the German commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest from 1997 to 2023.
  • From 2024 we will have a new commentator who will accompany the ESC.
  • Who is Peter Urban and what is he doing today?

For over 25 years, Peter Urban was the German voice of the “Eurovision Song Contest”. But after the show in Liverpool in 2023, the commentator stopped working for the ESC. This year’s contest in Malmö will be commented on by a new voice for the first time after a quarter of a decade on German television.

Who is the new commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest?

From 2024, radio presenter Thorsten Schorn will take over the role of German commentator for the ESC. When Schorn is not commentating on the “Eurovision Song Contest”, he will be presenting for the broadcasters WDR and EinsLive.

Schorn also hosts the RTL show “Because they don’t know what’s happening”. Since 2012, the presenter has also been the popular voice-over for the VOX show “Shopping Queen” with Guido Maria Kretschmer.

Thorsten Schorn is an enthusiastic ESC fan and was already able to commentate on the German preliminary round in February 2024, which Isaak won with his song “Always on the Run”. The presenter can also be heard in other shows related to the ESC.

What is Peter Urban doing today?

Peter Urban retired in 2013 and ended many of his roles as a journalist, commentator and presenter. But he did not let three of his heart’s projects go away: the commentary role at the ESC, his “Peter Urban Show” on NDR 2 and the music podcast “Urban Pop”.

After the end of his ESC career, Urban continues to concentrate on his two radio jobs. Every Thursday at 9 p.m. the journalist hosts his “Peter Urban Show”. New episodes of his podcast “Urban Pop” appear every two weeks.

Shortly before Peter Urban commentated on his last “Eurovision Song Contest”, he published his autobiography “On Air – Memories of my life with music”. In the book, the journalist reports on his time as a radio presenter and ESC commentator.
