Eurozone: Retail sales increase more than expected year on year in February

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Retail sales in the euro zone rose slightly more than expected year-on-year in February, supported by petrol and non-food items, data showed on Thursday by Eurostat.

According to the Statistical Office of the European Union, retail sales in the 19 countries sharing the euro rose 0.3% in February month-on-month and 5.0% year-on-year.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast an increase of 0.6% on a month and 4.8% over the year.

Eurozone fuel sales volume rose 3.2% in February from January, up 12.0% year-on-year, while non-food sales rose 0.8 % over the month and 9.3% compared to February 2021.

Sales volume in the food, beverage and tobacco sector, on the other hand, fell 0.5% month on month and 2% year-on-year.
