Evacuation possible – fuss about “anomaly” at Innsbruck train station

Extensive closures have been announced around Innsbruck main station on Tuesday night. As the city reports, an “anomaly” was discovered during excavations. This could indicate a war relic. The public and drivers are called upon to take precautions.

In advance of construction work at the intersection of Südtiroler Platz and Brixner Straße, an anomaly was registered during soil tests. This is what it says in a press release from the city of Innsbruck that was sent out on Monday afternoon. There is a possibility that a war relic is slumbering underground in the area. Securing the affected area began at 8 p.m. On Tuesday night, the situation around the busy main train station will be assessed by experts. This could have far-reaching effects: In the station area there will be local driving bans for motor vehicle traffic and barriers for pedestrians from 8 p.m. Only after the anomaly has been uncovered can it be assessed which further measures are necessary. It is said that this could extend to possible evacuations of the surrounding area. And further: “All essential emergency organizations are ready for an emergency.” Neighbors should prepare, cars have to go. Neighbors directly at the intersection of Südtiroler Platz/Brixner Straße are asked to make preparations for a short-term evacuation. In addition, all drivers who have parked their vehicle near the main train station are urgently requested to remove it. The Innsbruck municipal companies (IKB) and TIGAS are building a new groundwater network at Bozner Platz and laying district heating pipes in order to provide environmentally friendly heating and cooling in the future. Work is therefore underway in several construction phases around Bozner Platz; the construction areas extend from Bozner Platz via Brixner Straße to Innsbruck main station.
