If you want to darken or shade your window, you need roller shutters or blinds. While retrofitting roller shutters is possible, but involves major structural work, almost every household has the option of installing blinds in the interior.

With a blind you can not only influence the amount of light and brightness in a room, they also have an impact on the room climate and can reflect incoming sun rays. The material used is crucial for the look and effect of the blind.

To date, blinds have been sold primarily in stationary retail stores; pre-assembled offerings for standard dimensions can mainly be found online. There are countless fabrics to choose from for complete or partial darkening, and transparent versions that still allow visibility are also available. When actually ordering, you can order different types of blinds in addition to different fabrics: should it be a single or double blind, will it be attached above the window or in the reveal? Finally, the blind is also available in a stylish “cassette” or in a simpler version without a decorative cassette.

The cassette version with transparent fabric was ordered for installation above a floor-to-ceiling window with a French balcony in a senior citizen’s apartment. The right part of the window is equipped with a lock for an air conditioning unit, but this is uninstalled outside of midsummer. (Unfortunately, both window parts have not been cleaned.)

The actual ordering process at tink is very simple – in addition to the material, appearance and method of attachment, the dimensions also have to be entered. The order is then completed and the MotionBlinds are made to measure.

Once the MotionBlinds have been delivered, you will notice that the scope of delivery is clear: in addition to (short) instructions, there are only four wall-mounting hooks for attaching the MotionBlinds.

For further installation, the Eve app must be downloaded and “Add device” selected. The blind delivered should now be connected to a USB-C charger, a QR code hidden in the blind should be scanned with the app, and the blind is then connected to the smartphone and ready for installation.

The setup, which is accompanied by the app, should now pause until assembly is complete. The hooks supplied for assembly can be attached quickly and easily with two screws each; the manufacturer recommends using such a hook every 80 centimeters. Because there was no risk of damaging the roller shutter box during the installation here, we made do with using just two hooks with a width of 215 centimeters.

After installing the hooks, the blind is simply snapped into place, which is acknowledged with a click noise. Even with just two hooks, the blinds are mounted securely.

Setting up the blind continues with various steps to synchronize the device with the app – for example, the maximum desired unwinding and rolling position must be defined once; a favorite position can also be specified and controlled later using a short command.

Eve’s MotionBlinds are then completely installed and ready for use. The roller blinds are controlled via a cord on the device, via an app and even via voice command when integrated into a smart home (MotionBlinds are Matter compatible).

Conclusion

If there is anything to complain about besides the price – the test sample costs just under 500 euros – it would be the noise of the electric motor. You can clearly hear it at work, but the blind is also large at around four square meters and has a correspondingly powerful motor installed.

We see the biggest advantage as the fact that the MotionBlinds are installed in no time and no electrical cables have to be laid. The motor is only charged sporadically and exclusively via USB-C cable.

Otherwise it is a very useful smart gimmick. The shopping experience at tink, including the free fabric samples, leaves nothing to be desired. The resident of the test apartment is no longer very mobile and devices that can be controlled via voice command make life much easier.

The fact that the blind has a higher price than standard goods seems justified because of the high quality appearance of the materials used and the obviously high quality of workmanship as well as the additional benefit.
