Google Maps is clearly the market leader among navigation apps. The app is installed on virtually every cell phone and many drivers use it for longer journeys or for commuting. However, there are good and even more recommendable alternatives.

Why? TomTom GO Navigation integrates practical functions that we don’t want to miss. This includes a 3D lane assistant, which is far better at exits and turning than Google’s minimalist one. This is worth its weight in gold, especially in unfamiliar environments.

The app also shows obstacles along the entire route clearly via a strip on the right of the image. So you can see what’s coming up: construction sites, lane narrowings, accidents or even alternative routes that will get you to your destination faster.

When it comes to alternative routes, we think TomTom’s approach is exemplary. If a faster route is available, you will be informed immediately – but you don’t have to take it, you have the choice. TomTom also manages to avoid congested main streets in cities via small side streets, saving time and easing your nerves after work.

Last but not least, with TomTom GO Navigation, as is usual with a good navigation solution, all map packages for various countries can be downloaded and used offline. This is practical, for example, abroad – so you don’t waste expensive data volume. This also works with Google Maps, but not nearly as conveniently and only partially.

Integrated speed camera detector

Even if it is no longer allowed, at least in Germany, a speed camera detector is also integrated, which warns of stationary and mobile speed traps. This can be used at your own risk in Germany or legally in countries where it is permitted. Speed ​​traps will be displayed along the route and you will receive an acoustic warning if you wish.

In our everyday test of the two solutions (some colleagues commute to the office by car), we did not notice a major difference in the traffic data. Both apps provide good data in real time, even if Google is probably ahead due to the number of Android users. On long journeys, TomTom often provided better alternative routes in traffic jams.
