Even less salary – teacher: “Wants to work in Vienna, but can’t”

Educators are desperately wanted in Vienna. Barbara P. from Upper Austria wants to move to the federal capital, but the education department puts obstacles in her way.

“It is my personal dream to teach in Vienna,” says Barbara P. in an interview with “Krone”. And although teachers are desperately needed in Vienna, changing jobs is extremely difficult. Because in a Viennese school, the 50-year-old would initially only get a fixed-term contract for one year – after that it could be switched to a permanent one, but the education department cannot guarantee that either. Only for the salary of a young teacher would already be in the twelfth salary step. In Vienna, however, her salary would be reduced to the level of a young teacher! “I just can’t afford that, I also have to think about my pension,” the teacher complains. In addition, she could not be promised a job in good time. The notification could also not arrive until September, but that would be too late, since she would first have to give notice at the school in Upper Austria. “It’s always said that Vienna is desperately looking for teachers, and they are putting such obstacles in our way!” “Whereas at the beginning of the year there were 25 teachers per month who terminated their employment, I now receive 25 notices per week,” says Thomas Krebs (FCG), the top Viennese compulsory school teacher staff representative Compulsory school teachers have a special contract and therefore no completed training.
