Even more headwind for Giffey: Next SPD district association votes against CDU alliance

Even more headwind for Giffey
Next SPD district association votes against CDU alliance

In the capital, the SPD and CDU are in the middle of coalition negotiations, after the end of which there will be a member survey of the Social Democrats. Meanwhile, the third district association is already speaking out against a grand coalition.

In Berlin, another SPD district association has spoken out against a coalition with the CDU. At an SPD district delegates’ meeting in Tempelhof-Schoeneberg, a majority voted for a corresponding application by the Jusos. 71 delegates voted in favor, with 30 votes against and 5 abstentions, as the district association announced. The SPD branches in the Neukölln and Steglitz-Zehlendorf districts had previously opposed an alliance with the CDU. The SPD has a total of twelve district associations in Berlin.

The Berlin Jusos recently opposed the planned coalition with the CDU. A motion by the state board entitled “NoGroKo – Berlin only works with the left” received the very large majority of the approximately 80 delegates at a Jusos conference in the SPD federal headquarters in Berlin. They demanded vehemently and with great applause the continuation of the coalition with the Greens and Left and fundamentally rejected cooperation with the CDU.

SPD member vote is due in April

After the repeat election on February 12 and the exploratory talks with other parties, the SPD leadership around the chairwoman and governing mayor Franziska Giffey decided to enter into coalition negotiations with the election winner, the CDU. The decision was made even though the previous coalition of SPD, Greens and Left Party had a majority in the House of Representatives. The ongoing coalition negotiations are expected to be completed by the end of the month. After that, an SPD member vote on the coalition agreement is planned for April. The Social Democrats in the capital have around 18,500 members.

Giffey recently said that she hopes to be able to convince critics of the black-red coalition negotiations within the SPD. “It is now important for us to do a lot of information and communication work in the party,” she said after the first coalition talks with the CDU.
