Even on Mac, the latest version of Google Chrome is faster than Safari

Good news for Google: Mountain View was able to taunt Apple by announcing that the latest version of its Google Chrome browser had better speed scores than Safari on macOS.

This is an article published on the Chromium blog which announces the results of a benchmark carried out to test the performance of the new version 99 of Google Chrome on Mac. Chrome would therefore have obtained the highest speed score (300) achieved to date, among all browsers. Safari, meanwhile, lags behind with a small speed score of 280. The benchmark used to perform this test is Speedometer, which simulates the real actions of an Internet user on a web browser.

Google shines with Chrome

But it turns out that this tool was created by the team behind WebKit, which is Safari’s rendering engine. Some will notice the irony of the situation. Google Chrome therefore obtains an excellent score there, made possible, as the blog post explains, thanks to the ThinLTO optimization technique created by Google. It is this code optimization function that allows Chrome to be 7% faster than Safari on Mac. Of course, for a human being, it will probably be difficult to assess a 7% speed gain with the naked eye.

Google also adds, just to drive the point home, that their tests have shown Chrome’s graphics performance to be 15% faster than Safari’s. Chrome would also be 47% faster than its version 17 months ago. But that’s not all, since the Chrome team concludes by indicating that they have made as much progress on the Chrome version for Android, loading a page now taking 15% less time.

It only remains for Apple to redouble its efforts to offer the best possible browser on the Mac.
