The mobile application of ChatGPT had a successful September, with record revenue of $4.58 million. The data nevertheless reveals a slowdown in growth.

In September, ChatGPT, recently landed on Android, recorded 15.6 million downloads, for approximately $4.6 million in gross revenue, for its applications on Google’s mobile OS and on iOS. But the growth in turnover generated by the application is a little less flamboyant, having gone from 39% in August to 20% last month. This inevitably raises questions about market saturation and the long-term viability of the ChatGPT+ paid subscription.

A revenue record for ChatGPT, but a slowdown that raises questions

This slowdown in revenue growth could indicate that ChatGPT is approaching its ceiling in terms of mobile users willing to pay for its paid service, remember that it is set at $19.99 per month.

The ChatGPT+ subscription has found its audience, as after bringing in $2.1 million in June at OpenAI, it has since more than doubled. It should be noted, however, that other applications, such as Ask AI, bring in even more money for their publishers, thanks to considerable advertising spending.

ChatGPT competitor Ask AI hit a peak of $6.55 million in revenue in August, before dipping slightly to $5.51 million last month. The chatbot, downloaded millions of times, remains the leader in terms of revenue.

Who from Google or Apple earns the most from ChatGPT and OpenAI?

Let’s take the thinking a little further. Take net revenues for example, which differ when advertising expenses are taken into account. ChatGPT thus brought in $3.2 million in September, after commissions collected by Apple and Google for purchases integrated into iOS and Android.

With its additional 15.6 million installs in September, ChatGPT brings its total smartphone downloads to 52.2 million. As for the month of September, the victory goes to the Google Play Store, from which 9 million downloads come, compared to 6.6 million to the credit of the App Store.

But despite the impressive number of downloads, it’s the App Store that remains the largest contributor to ChatGPT’s mobile revenue, with $3 million last month. 60% of the turnover of mobile conversational robots can be attributed to the Apple firm. Will ChatGPT be able to keep up this pace, and how will users react once they learn of credible alternatives? We will find out in the coming months.
