Even Samsung can’t do it: Xiaomi develops a unique smartphone

Xiaomi is not only known for its countless price-performance hits, but also for wild smartphone concepts. In recent years, a wide variety of ideas have been presented, but they often did not make it into a final product that was actually sold. That could be different with the latest idea, because it offers added value that Samsung does not yet cover.

Xiaomi develops folding phone with 360-degree hinge

There are now quite a few folding cell phones on the market. Samsung is currently the market leader and, according to the latest sales figures, covers almost the entire market alone. But Xiaomi could be working on an idea that Samsung has not yet offered. Namely on a foldable smartphone, which not only folds in one direction, but also has a so-called 360-degree hinge. In that case you could Not only open the display, but also fold it down. The inner screen could be folded outwards (source: Weibo).

Such 360 degree hinges we know primarily from laptops. This is how normal computers quickly turn into tablets by simply folding the keyboard onto the back. If Xiaomi creates something like this with a smartphone and uses the appropriate software that emphasizes the added value, it would be a small sensation.

At the same time, such a technology is of course also an enormous challenge. To develop a 360-degree hinge that foldable screen can bend in both directions, has never been implemented before. A lot of technological know-how would have to be incorporated here in order to develop a working version. If Xiaomi can do that, it would be a huge success and a real unique selling point.

The first folding cell phone from Xiaomi still looks very classic:

Will such a Xiaomi smartphone really become a reality?

That’s always the big question. Xiaomi implements some ideas, such as the second display on the back of the Mi 11 Ultra. Other ideas remain only prototypes. Years ago Xiaomi already showed a smartphone that can be folded in two places. It just wasn’t enough for the final release.
