even with a FR IBAN, think about this detail in your tax return

While Revolut and N26 now offer FR IBANs, you must not forget to declare to taxes, in 2024, the closure of the account abroad if you carried out the procedure in 2023. Last step before finally having peace of mind this side.

Declare an N26 or Revolut account abroad for taxes // Source: Frandroid

Revolut and N26 are two very popular neobanks. By offering various services, they have managed to attract a large number of users. The possibility of having a free or low-cost card capable of paying worldwide without fees is notably among their key assets. And that’s good, both establishments now offer FR IBANs. Revolut opened the way in 2022 before N26 also got started in 2023. Having a French IBAN is very practical. This allows you to receive your salary in the account concerned, but also to simplify your income declaration to the tax services. Until recently, accounts opened with Revolut and N26 were necessarily established abroad – Lithuania (LT) for Revolut and Germany (DE) for N26.

However, any bank account opened abroad must be declared to the French tax authorities. If you forget, you risk a fine ranging from 1,500 to 10,000 euros. The switch to the FR IBAN at Revolut and N26 therefore simplifies the lives of their users. But beware ! There is one small detail not to forget.

Declare a Revolut or N26 account closed abroad

Remember thatyou must also declare the closure of accounts abroad. In the income tax return, annex no. 3916 – 3916 bis concerns the “ declaration by a resident of an account opened, held, used or closed abroad[…]».

This is even more explicitly stated on an N26 FAQ page.

If, in 2023, your German IBAN has become a French IBAN, your German account has been closed. We therefore invite you to declare that your German N26 account has been closed in your 2024 tax return.

Contacted byFrandroidRevolut explains for its part that “more than 99%» eligible customers have already migrated from an LT IBAN to a FR IBAN. However, the company specifies that a significant portion of these people took the step in 2023. They will therefore have to remember to make, in 2024, the declaration of closure of the account domiciled in Lithuania.

You will have understood, if you find yourself in this situation, it is only from next year that you will finally have peace of mind for your income tax return.

In addition, for those who have made — or will make — the change of domiciliation in 2024, it will be necessary to make the closing declaration in 2025. If in doubt about your situation, contact your bank so that it can assist you accordingly. must.
