Evening or morning shower, when is the best time?

While the current health situation is somewhat messing up our schedules, it is legitimate to wonder about the chronology of our routine everyday moments. So, is it better to take a shower in the morning or in the evening? What is your preference ? What does the science say?

Some people prefer the morning shower because it allows you to wake up, get going, unwind and feel ready to start the day.
Others will tell you that in the evening, to prepare for a sweet night by getting everything clean under the duvet, to wash off the pollution of the day, nothing beats a good shower! So how can you avoid taking a shower twice a day (because neither the Planet nor your skin recommends it)?

And what does science say?

Studies have been carried out and all converge on the same verdict: the evening shower wins! Indeed, the relaxing effects of a good shower in winter, and refreshing in summer, promote good sleep.
Elizabeth Culnan, postdoctoral fellow in sleep at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, enlightens us: “Taking a shower or bath before bed can help improve the quality of sleep and help you fall asleep faster. An hour and a half to two hours before bedtime, this will warm up your body and then allow you to feel a more pronounced drop in body temperature, which promotes sleep. "
This drop in body temperature slows down our heart and respiratory rates, not to mention digestion, and thus places the body in perfect conditions for optimal sleep.

In fact, taking a hot shower just before going to bed is not recommended, as the heat does not promote sleep. It is for this same reason that it is also advisable to shower in the evening in summer, when the thermometer is still high, in order to cool off (in this case, just before bedtime) and bring down the body temperature.

The shower in the morning is useless?

While physiologically, there is no evidence of the benefits of the morning shower, psychologically, it is different. It acts like what is called a "zeitgeber", That is to say, in plain language, an external stimulus that allows the adjustment of the circadian rhythm. So the morning shower without which many people couldn't start their day properly, provides the brain with information that it can really wake up and start its day.

Finally, be aware that a trend supported by many naturopaths is to start with an invigorating cold shower. Cold water acts as a venotonic on the bloodstream and helps oxygenate the body and organs.
Of course, if you are testing, you will have to proceed according to a certain protocol: start with the lower body and go up, breathe deeply and slowly, then dress well so as not to let the feeling of cold set in.
