Little by little, complementary foods are replacing milk meals. The baby is not only optimally supplied with nutrients, but also has completely new taste experiences! What you should know about complementary foods and how you can make the evening porridge yourself.

When do you start feeding complementary foods?

Between the 5th and 7th month you can start with complementary foods and gradually replace the milk meals with it. It is recommended to first replace the lunch meal with porridge, then introduce the evening porridge. At the beginning, small portions are useful, a few spoons are enough, as the baby has to get used to this food first.

The first porridge should consist of one type of vegetable (e.g. carrots), after a while potatoes are added. In addition, the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) recommends regularly including meat in the child's diet so that it is supplied with sufficient iron. So you can z. B. expand weekly and from the vegetable, a vegetable-potato-mash and then a vegetable-potato-meat mash. If the baby eats his lunch porridge regularly, you can start with the evening porridge.

Evening porridge: recipe and preparation

The second porridge replaces another meal of breast milk or baby milk and is classically a cereal porridge, this consists of milk and fruit in addition to the cereals. He takes care of the baby and a. with carbohydrates, protein as well as calcium and other nutrients. In addition, the combination is good for filling, making it ideal as an evening porridge. This is how the simple recipe is prepared:

ingredients

  • 200 ml whole milk
  • 20 g of grain
  • 20 g pureed fruit (one variety)

Uses pasteurized and ultra-high temperature Whole milk (UHT milk is also possible!) or baby milk. On the other hand, raw or preferred milk should be avoided, as according to the BZgA this can be a risk to the health of the child. Be on grain Oatmeal, semolina or other whole grain flakes for babies recommended to use the following types of fruit:

  • Apples
  • Apricots
  • Pears
  • banana
  • peach
  • nectarine

preparation

The basic recipe is recommended for infants from the sixth to eighth month. The preparation is uncomplicated and quick – and this is how it works:

  1. Put the milk and cereal in a saucepan and bring to the boil.
  2. Let simmer for a few minutes.
  3. Puree or muse the fruit and then stir into the milk-cereal mixture.
  4. Let cool down before feeding.

Should the evening porridge be gluten-free?

If the baby has already been diagnosed with celiac disease, the question is superfluous because the diet must then be gluten-free. Alternatives to cereals that contain gluten are rice and millet!

Edith Gätjen, lecturer in infant and child nutrition at the association for independent health advice in Wettenberg, advised the online magazine Baby und Familie that babies between the ages of five and six months should eat cereals containing gluten, as this could prevent gluten intolerance later.
