Everyone loves this movie with Hugh Grant… except Hugh Grant!

Did you know that Hugh Grant was not at all a fan of “Four Weddings and a Funeral”, the cult romantic comedy that revealed him to the general public? The British actor recently returned to the subject.

Released in theaters in 1994, the romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral introduced Hugh Grant to the general public. But as surprising as it may seem, the British actor does not like this film at all, a big popular success with nearly 5.8 million admissions in France!

In his forthcoming memoir, titled Did I Ever Tell You This?Sam Neill recalls a moment spent with Hugh Grant during which the latter told him all the bad things he thought of the classic so british by Mike Newell. And as much to say that he did not go there with the back of the spoon!

“I had dinner with Hugh Grant in London, right after we shot the movie. Sirens together”says Sam Neill in comments reported by IndieWire. “I asked him what he just did and he was like, ‘Oh, total sh*t called Four Weddings and a Funeral. A disaster. An absolute sh*t.”

Asked today about these remarks by IndieWire, Hugh Grant does not deny his dislike for Four weddings and a funeral but uses a much more polished language than that reported by Sam Neill. “I love Sam and miss him, and it’s true that we were all sure we had a giant failure until the first screenings”says the 62-year-old actor.

“I was clearly wrong and the film changed my life”continues Hugh Grant. “It was the start of a happy friendship with Richard Curtis (he will work again with the director and screenwriter on Love at first sight in Notting Hill, Love Actually and The Diary of Bridget Jones, editor’s note) and I always had the greatest respect for Mike Newell who taught me things that I use today.”

Love Actually on TF1: an “atrocious” scene for Hugh Grant

In 2017, Hugh Grant, at the microphone of Deadlinehad already swung on Four Weddings and a Funeral. “They wanted me to have the worst haircut in the world, but it backfired because that haircut was then copied”he declared. Rowan Atkinson was funny, but the rest was horrible and I had to stop myself from crying on set… Then there was a screening in Santa Monica and suddenly everyone liked the film. It was a total surprise to everyone.”

Hugh Grant will star in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Thieves on April 12.
