This book published by CNRS editions in March 2022 is a very useful educational tool for all audiences.
Climate change is a fact and an emergency. It is therefore necessary to understand all of its challenges: its origins (human activities), its consequences (on global warming, extreme phenomena, etc.), its solutions. But explaining the climate emergency is, in itself, a challenge.
This is where simple and effective visual illustrations come in, but also books. CNRS editions combine the two: Understand everything (or almost) about the climate was published on March 3, 2022. We owe this book to a collaboration between bonmate (Thomas Wagner), Anne Bres and Claire Mark. Thirty scientists participated. The preface is signed Valerie Masson-Delmotteclimatologist, research director at the CEA, co-chair of group 1 of the IPCC since 2015.
A book of public utility
In the face of climate change, we need action. But this one is difficult without making sense. Social networks are a great tool for communication and connection, but they also represent a confused maelstrom, where lying climatosceptic discourses are rife. There are also legitimate questions, to which it is not so easy to find a clear answer, in particular because science does not have the place it should have in society – media, education.
A medium like Understand everything (or almost) about the climate provides an effective response to this need for meaning. Moreover, one can reasonably consider this work as being of public utility. And the brilliant idea of the CNRS to send 1,000 copies to elected officials is far from absurd, quite the contrary. We would almost go so far as to recommend it to the National Education as a school book, or in any case, for wide distribution.
Because 130 pages are really enough for authors to draw up a fresco on climate change that is at the same time clear, rigorous, and moreover, pleasant to consult. Each chapter answers a fundamental question. For example :
- What is the level of consensus on climate change?
- What is the difference between weather and climate?
- What is the link between CO2 and climate change?
- Why is sea level rising?
There are, in all, 20 questions of this type. Responses are not plain text. They are built around illustrations, with characters, arrows, graphics, highlighted elements. In just a few seconds, by following the process presented to us, the knowledge is perfectly understood and integrated.
Understand everything (or almost) about the climate can be useful in all hands — children, teenagers, adults of all ages — as a tool in the fight against misinformation and as a scientific book that conveys knowledge.
