ÖKO-TEST tested 20 types of cat litter – and the test winner, of all things, is an unknown cheap product from a discounter. We will tell you which products the experts also recommend for your house tiger.
The cat litter should be absorbent, dust-free and ensure that it doesn’t smack of severe cat pee. If a cat litter meets all of these criteria, cat owners will be happy. The magazine ÖKO-TEST (Edition 1/2022) has tested 20 cat litter products – and can recommend half of them.
Shortcomings are above all: Deficits in odor control and absorbency in clumping litter based on wood or plant fibers. The eco-testers praise the sustainability of the production, but also note that clumping litter made from clay minerals is clearly more absorbent. It was also more difficult to remove dirt from non-clumping litter – mostly leftovers remained on the litter box in the test.
Lidl is test winner
Nine types of cat litter perform “good” in the test. Only one product can secure the top grade “very good”: The test winner is this Coshida cat litter clumping ultra white from Lidl for around 2.75 euros for 6 liters.
The following types of clumping cat litter performed “well” in the test and are also real price tips:
- Cachet Classic Cat Litter Ultra by Aldi (2.75 euros / 6 liters)
- Finé premium clumping litter natural white from net (2.75 euros / 6 liters)
- Yes! Cat clumping litter from rewe (2.99 euros / 10 kg)
- Lucky Cat clumping litter from Penny (1.99 euros / 10 kg)
- Mieze Katz clumping litter compact natural light from Norma (2.75 euros / 7 liters)
The rest of the tested types of cat litter are not really bad, but do not get more than “satisfactory”.
No harmful substances in the cat litter
The eco-testers can reassure cat fans who fear that they or their house tigers will come into contact with problematic ingredients when filling or cleaning. All products are free of heavy metals or microscopic fiber fractions that could damage the lungs if inhaled.
