everything that changes in your iPhone during the next update

This Monday, September 20, 2021, Apple will deploy a free major update for all iPhones from the 6S and iPhone SE 1st generation models.

This Monday, September 20, 2021, Apple will deploy a major update, iOS 15, for its smartphones. This new operating system aims to improve and add new functions to iPhones, whether they are latest generation or older. iOS 15 is indeed compatible with the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus and iPhone SE 1st generation until the very last iPhone which will be marketed in a few days, the iPhone 13.

iOS 15 is a free update that will install automatically (if you have enabled the option in general settings) on your iPhone in the next few days or that you can install manually whenever you want. It not only improves the security of the Apple brand smartphones and comes with its share of new features and improvements. Here’s what’s changing with the iOS 15 update.

New features in iOS 15: FaceTime overhauled

FaceTime calls compatible with Android and Windows
Until now, Apple limited the use of FaceTime, videoconferencing system sounds, exclusively to devices in its ecosystem: iPhone, iPad, Mac and Macbook. In the FaceTime application, a new button “Create a link” allows you to send a URL to connect from any device, whether it is an Android smartphone or tablet or even ‘a Windows computer, for example. Convenient and what’s more, conversations remain end-to-end encrypted even with third-party devices.

SharePlay, (soon) the new function of FaceTime
Apple will also take advantage of iOS 15 to introduce a new option in its videoconferencing system (but it will not be available immediately, you will have to wait a bit). This addition will make it possible to share the same entertainment with several people, such as music, films, series or even its screen. This will concern Apple services but also, in a second step, other third-party services such as Disney +, HBO Max, TikTok or even Twitch to name a few.

In addition, Apple is adding new Portrait mode to blur its background during a call. The brand has also added a possibility to activate voice isolation. With Airpods in particular, you can FaceTime while you do the dishes and the people you are talking to will hear your voice but very little running tap water, for example.

iOS 15: a “Concentration” mode to reduce screen time

We look at an average of 221 times the screen of our smartphone per day, according to a Tecmark study. Watch a notification, stop an alert, monitor social networks… the opportunities are numerous but they often come to disturb us in the program of our day. Apple had already introduced “Screen time”, a system that allows us to monitor our level of use of the smartphone and see which applications mobilize us the most. Now the brand is stepping up a gear with “Concentration”.

Depending on a time, place or application used, a mode can be activated. The latter will then hide the alerts and notifications so that your iPhone screen does not turn on for a yes or a no. You can still allow certain notifications, from specific people or from apps you consider fundamental. Several modes of concentration are suggested: rest (cut off notifications at night or during a nap), work or even “time for yourself”. This last option allows you to limit unwanted alerts when you come home at night and want to spend time with family without being bothered, for example.

Apple introduces LiveText as a feature of the Photos app. With this “Live Text” system, all you have to do is take an element with text (see the photo above) then display this snapshot in the Photos application. If text is present in the image, a logo is displayed at the bottom right of the screen. Just click on it for text boxes to appear. You can then copy and paste these elements, search the web, share this text with another person or activate the translation. Useful to get rid of the menu of a restaurant abroad for example, but also to copy and paste a long WiFi code, to retrieve a cooking recipe or an extract from a book.

Update for the weather forecast

Apple is also taking advantage of iOS 15 to introduce a new look for the Weather application. Everything is more realistic, helped by new animated backgrounds. You can also activate precipitation notifications in the following hour (rain, snow, hail, sleet, etc.) to avoid being caught on foot or by bike by bad weather.

Sharing in the spotlight

The “Shared with you” option can be found everywhere with iOS 15: Music, Podcast, Safari, TV, iMessage or Photos. This function allows you, when you receive a link shared via iMessage, to receive a reminder in the app concerned – Apple Music for a piece of music for example – to consult what a loved one has shared with you when you open this app. And if you click on the person’s name in the app, iOS 15 will redirect you to the conversation on iMessage so you can reply and react.
