While Renault has just presented the production version of its R5 E-Tech electric, the brand is preparing the renewal of another of its legendary city cars. So, to complete its range of electric cars, Renault will launch a plugged-in R4 that is a little more imposing than the R5.

What will the electric 4L look like?

Renault will not be content with reviving two of its iconic city cars in the same year, with the only difference being the style of the two models. The electric 4L will thus be more imposing than the R5 and notably higher, taking inspiration from SUVs. The new Renault 5 measures 3.92 m long and we can expect the electric 4L to be around twenty centimeters larger. This should allow it to improve the habitability of the R5, which is one of the few points that disappointed us after discovering it.

As for the car’s lines, Renault has already given a first glimpse in 2022 with its 4ever Trophy E-Tech concept. However, unlike the Renault 5 which was announced with a prototype close to the production version, the 4ever Trophy E-Tech is a real concept which is not intended to be marketed in the form that was presented to us. presented.

We must therefore expect the production Renault 4 E-Tech to be more sensible and also lower, without the many off-road gimmicks of the concept. This is particularly what the first prototypes seen in testing suggest, which look more like a raised city car than a real SUV.

The interior should be very close to that of the Renault 5 E-Tech, without necessarily being inspired by the original R4. This is what a visual from Renault’s communication on its R5 suggests, but which would actually show the interior of the future R4, as spotted The Argus.

According to an illustration published in 2021 by Renault, a van version of the modern R4 would also be on the program.

This version will allow Renault to offer a more compact electric utility vehicle than the Kangoo E-Tech.

What will be the technical sheet of the new Renault 4?

The Renault 4 E-Tech will take over the AmpR Small platform from the R5. Like it, it will therefore not offer a petrol version and will have a 100% electric range. The Renault 4 E-Tech’s engines and batteries are expected to be shared with the R5, which offers three power levels of 70 kW (95 hp), 90 kW (122 hp) and 110 kw (150 hp). It is also available in 40 kWh and 52 kWh versions. These two lithium-ion batteries (NMC) offer respectively 300 and 400 km of autonomy to the Renault 5 E-Tech, but should be slightly less durable on the side of the more imposing 4L.

Compared to the Renault 5 E-Tech, the R4 should adopt suspensions more geared towards comfort. However, it will not have to deal with the very pronounced roll of the original Renault 4, announced to Coach Vittorio d’Arienzo, in charge of developing his platform.

The engineer also indicated to Auto Express : “The platform is ready for four-wheel drive, and yes, we will consider it in the future.” Enough to make you dream of a 4×4 version of the electric 4L in homage to the old Renault 4 Sinpar.

When will Renault’s new 4L be released?

The production version of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric will be unveiled at the 2024 Paris Motor Show in October 2024. Its marketing is expected in spring 2025.

What will the price of the electric Renault 4 be?

While the electric R5 should start at a price excluding bonus of almost €25,000, the 4L will necessarily be a little more expensive. A price difference of around €4,000 between the two models would not be surprising, for a starting price below €30,000. Furthermore, the electric R4, which should be produced in Maubeuge in the North, should be eligible for the ecological bonus in France, currently €4,000.
