New horror film not to be missed on Netflix, The Orders of Evil is linked to another horror feature film. Warning, spoilers.
Available since October 27 on Netflix, The Orders of Evil (Hermana Muerte, (The Sister of Death), in original version) is the new horror film from Paco Plaza. The Spanish director has become a master of the genre in his country and is best known for its biggest critical and commercial success [REC]but also its sequels.
The Orders of Evil is set in post-war Spain and follows the journey of Narcisa (Aria Bedmar), a young novice with supernatural powers, who arrives in a former convent converted into a girls’ school to become a teacher and to take orders.
As the days pass, the strange events and increasingly disturbing situations that torment her push her to unravel the terrible tangle of secrets that surround the convent and haunt its occupants.
This new chilling and moving horror film from Paco Plaza is not a trivial project in his filmography since it is linked to another of his feature films.
One horror film can hide another
The Orders of Evil is in fact the prequel to the film Verónica, released in 2017, which was a success at the Spanish box office. It told the story of Verónica (Sandra Escacena), a young high school student who participated in a spiritualism session with friends during a solar eclipse in the early 1990s.
The teenager had no idea that she was going to be harassed by supernatural creatures who were attacking her family. She will then try everything to get rid of this dangerous illness. In her research, she can count on the help of Sister Muerte (Consuelo Trujillo), an elderly and blind nun with a troubled past who officiates in Verónica’s school.
And it turns out that The Orders of Evil centers on this Sister of Death and the origin of her story. The film recounts his childhood in the 1930s and his young years spent ten years later in a convent transformed into a school, which marked his life forever. It was following this traumatic paranormal experience that she became Sister Muerte.
In order to make a direct link between The Orders of Evil and Verónica, Paco Plaza thus inserted a very last scene at the end of The Orders of Evil: the arrival of Sister Muerte at Verónica’s school at the beginning of the years 1990. The young girl is also disturbed by the arrival of the famous nun and does not yet suspect the supernatural experience she will undergo.
For the moment, Paco Plaza has expanded the universe of Verónica with a prequel – The Orders of Evil – but it would not be surprising if the Spanish director seeks to develop other spin-offs or sequels, in the style of Conjuring, if the success of the film is there.
