In a new thriller, Ewan McGregor will play a mountaineer who tried to climb Mount Everest in the 1920s.

For his latest film project, Ewan McGregor (50) is following in the footsteps of the British mountaineer George Mallory (1886-1924). In addition to him, Sam Heughan (41) and Mark Strong (57) take on other roles in an adventure thriller called “Everest”. Doug Liman (55) will direct. This is reported by the industry portal “Deadline”. Filming will start in January 2022 in Great Britain and Italy.

Trip ends in mystery

The script is contributed by Sheldon Turner, who also wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay for “Up in the Air”. The story of the film is based on a true story and the book “Paths of Glory” by the British writer Jeffrey Archer (81). The thriller is set in 1921 and revolves around the mountaineer George Mallory (McGregor), who is chosen by Arthur Hinks (Strong) to climb Mount Everest, which was previously considered impregnable.

For Mallory and his rival, the eccentric George Finch (Heughan), the journey becomes a life and death challenge. How Mallory’s last attempt really ended has not yet been clarified: The mountaineer died on his third expedition up the mountain – it is unclear whether he or his companion ever made it to the top.
