After an unsatisfactory first half of the season, Admir Mehmedi is leaving VfL Wolfsburg for Turkey. The offensive player joins Antalyaspor.
Admir Mehmedi moves to Turkey.
Most recently, the ex-Nati star was under contract with VfL Wolfsburg.
His new player-coach at Antalyaspor is Nuri Sahin.
It was one of the biggest Swiss football celebrations of all time: The national team beat world champions France in Bucharest and made it into the quarter-finals of the European Championship. Admir Mehmedi took responsibility for the last penalty for Switzerland, kept his nerve and pocketed the ball from eleven meters – his last appearance in national dress. After the historic European Championship, Mehmedi announced his retirement from the national team.
“I still have two or three good years ahead of me as a footballer and now I want to devote all my energy to club football,” said Mehmedi in an interview with 20 minutes after the European Championship. But the 30-year-old surprisingly didn’t get a chance at VfL Wolfsburg. He only played 20 minutes in the first two competitive games of the season and since then Mehmedi has not been in the squad – the Swiss was not even registered as eligible to play in the Champions League.
Change to Nuri Sahin
Even when the club, after a good start to the season, fell completely towards the relegation zone, was eliminated from the Champions League and fired the coach, the former Wolfsburg top performer didn’t get a chance anymore. But Mehmedi remained calm, didn’t cause any trouble – and is now leaving the club for Turkey. According to information from 20 minutes, Mehmedi has been in the Turkish holiday city of Antalya for a few days. The negotiations with Club Antalyaspor should only be about the final details.
Finally, on Friday evening, the completion report will follow via Instagram: Antalyaspor posts a video showing Mehmedi in the dress of the current 15th in the Turkish Süper Lig. The new number 14 is said to have signed a contract with Antalyaspor until June 2024.
Former BVB and Real Madrid star Nuri Sahin (33) has been player-coach there since October and has brought the team back on the road to success – around December 11th they beat the previously unbeaten leader Trabzonspor. Now, in Mehmedi, he has an experienced and versatile offensive player for his squad – and for staying up.
