The number of new infections is increasing, the whole of Italy is going into Easter lockdown: But ex-Schalke professional Weston McKennie and two other players from Juventus Turin are celebrating a dinner party with up to 20 guests. The police rode in, the celebrants initially resist.

In October 2020, the Italian record champions Juventus Turin reported many corona cases. The former Bundesliga professional from Schalke 04, Weston McKennie, was one who tested positive for Covid-19 as part of the mandatory controls. Before that, his club colleague Cristiano Ronaldo was caught among the Portuguese national team. Now McKennie is making headlines again because of Corona – but this time he will not feel any sympathy from the fans.

McKennie and his teammates Paulo Dybala and Arthur Melo were surprised by the Italian police on Wednesday evening during a dinner party with their friends and a dozen to 20 people in the villa in the hills of Turin of the former Schalke professional. And around 11.30 p.m., well beyond the time of the anti-Covid curfew imposed by the government. The Carabinieri intervened on the recommendation of some of McKennie’s neighbors. The Italian media reported this consistently.

At first McKennie and his guests would not have cooperated and would not have opened the door, probably for fear of punishment. The Carabinieri had to wait an hour before they could enter the American’s house. After the initial handicap, everyone involved should have worked with the police. All those present were fined for unauthorized gatherings and violations of the Corona rules. There are also reports of resistance to officials in the room.

Strict restrictions are currently in place throughout Italy to curb the high number of infections. Because the number of new infections has recently risen sharply again, the government has tightened the anti-corona measures: For example, excursions and large family visits are prohibited over Easter. People should as far as possible stay in their apartments and houses. The situation in hospitals is also becoming more and more dramatic on site, with numerous intensive care units reporting high levels of utilization with Covid 19 patients.

The three Juventus players must also expect penalties and sanctions from their club, which first wanted to hear the versions of all those involved. McKennie, Dybala and Melo are supposed to play the derby against Torino on Saturday. How reckless the dinner party was was revealed when Leonardo Bonucci and Merih Demiral – both defenders of Juventus but not among McKennie’s guests – had to be isolated later in the day because they tested positive for the coronavirus.
