Except life-threatening – after a helicopter flight: divers on the mend

There are new details about the diver who only suffered severe internal injuries hours after his dive in Lake Millstatt. Since none of the surrounding pressure chambers were available, the medical team at the LKH Villach decided to have the victim transported to Murnau (D) by helicopter during the night.

“The patient was brought to us unconscious and ventilated,” says Steffen Wirth, chief physician at the special accident clinic. It is one of the few in Europe that has two pressure chambers. “In the case of diving accidents and decompression sickness, time is the decisive factor, so the patient was immediately taken to the pressure chamber.” The Villacher is now out of danger. “Given the circumstances, he is doing fine. He is on the mend, ”explains the chief doctor.
