There messaging from Google now has a new handy feature to make it easier to read e-mails written in a foreign language on your smartphone.

Why did this tool, so obvious to a company like Google, take so long to arrive on mobile versions?

Google Translate comes to the mobile email client after years of waiting

You may receive e-mails in English, German or Spanish, for example when booking a trip to a foreign destination. If you are not familiar with these different languages, or if your college courses are starting to be seriously dated, it is probably difficult for you to understand all the information communicated in these different letters.

For years, Google has offered a translation tool, the aptly named Google Translate, which allows you to find French language content in just a few seconds. Google Translate has made considerable progress in providing translations that respect the context and the tone of the sentences indicated, and makes fewer and fewer errors in the field.

Still, copying and pasting an e-mail into Google Translate is a waste of time, a user experience that is not really up to those usually offered by the search engine. The Gmail teams are just as aware of this and are now offering a new option, which integrates Google Translate directly into Gmail.

An automatic translation tool for Gmail Android and iOS

Version 2023.07.23.x for Android and iOS brings a “Translate” menu to the email options present in Gmail. When receiving an email in a different language than the default on your device, a banner will automatically appear in the header to allow you to translate it with one click. You can also, through the same means, return to the original version.

If the translation does not work, a manual option is provided. To find it, you will have to click on the icon opening the options menu (the three small dots) and then click on “Translate” to access a second menu asking you to indicate your preferred language. More than 100 languages are supported by the translation tool, which is as many as Google Translate.

Updating is done on the server side, and even if your app is up to date, you may not see the option appear yet. It should take a few days before the tool is deployed to all user accounts.
