EXCLUDED. Naïma Rodric (Such a great sun): “I did not slam the door”

At the beginning of October 2021, Naïma Rodric, the original interpreter of Lucille in Un si grand soleil (France 2), surprised fans by leaving the series in which she had been playing since 2018. After four months of silence, she delivers, exclusively, the reasons for his departure.

TV Star: Your departure fromsuch a big sun was brutal. What happened?

Naima Rodric : Contrary to what has been said, I did not slam the door. I left the series by artistic choice. We had been talking about it for two months with the production and the authors. I had been approached by Olivier Marchal to play in Overdose, his next film produced by Gaumont and Amazon. It was an opportunity I couldn’t see myself missing.

Where were your relations with the production?

Excellent and this, from the beginning, I had even just signed season 4, that is to say! I even went there with great pleasure and then this project happened. We tried to find a solution with the authors and the production of Un si grand soleil so that Lucille could go on an internship, for example, while I could shoot this film. In vain. And it’s a shame because I should have been released for just seven days. But I think it was complicated to rewrite everything in the time imposed by a daily newspaper, especially since at the start, the ark in which Lucille found herself with Mo and David was planned with Alice (Maëlle Mietton). The plot had already been rewritten, and the writers could not release a third version with another character from the series. We found ourselves in an impasse, so I made the decision to leave.

In what state of mind did you leave?

It broke my heart because I am very attached to my partners who have, for the most part, become friends. I am even the godmother of Aurore Delplace’s son (Johanna Lemeur), I have also forged strong ties with Aïssam Medhem (Akim) as well as with all those who work on the series. Professionally, it taught me a lot and I am very grateful that I was given my chance. But, at some point, you have to know how to take risks and not lock yourself into a single character. The whole point of our job is to be able to move towards different roles.

What role do you play in Overdose?

My character is called Vanessa, it is a strong head, crazy. She is the wife of the leader of a drug cartel played by Alberto Ammann (Narcos). In the cast there is also Sofia Essaïdi, Bruno Lopes (Kool Shen), Assaad Bouab (Dix pour cent)… It was a crazy experience to shoot for OIivier Marchal who is a brilliant director and a really charming man.

How did your experience on Un si grand soleil help you for this role?

In one day of filming in Montpellier, we could have several different directors. It teaches us to adapt. The rhythm also requires a particular concentration which induces to know its text with the cord. We are all war machines after working on a daily soap opera.

Do you regret leaving?

I don’t regret having made an important artistic choice for me. The only thing I could regret is that we couldn’t find a way to combine the two shoots. It’s a shame but not dramatic either. It’s just a page turning.

Have you watched the first steps of Alicia Dadoun who took over the role of Lucille?

Yes, of course, and I find her sparkling, super pretty. It must not be easy for her to resume at short notice a role established for three and a half years. It’s probably disturbing for the fans but I hope they will accept it as they accepted me and that it will have as much fun as I had on this series.
