Exclusion from the Champions League ?: UEFA is probably looking into the penalty for Super League clubs

Exclusion from the Champions League?
UEFA is probably looking into penalty for Super League clubs

Is there still a penalty for the Super League teams and even a multi-year exclusion from the Champions and Europa League? According to a media report, UEFA is currently negotiating the sentence with the clubs – some clubs are said to have agreed to the definitive abandonment of the Superliga.

According to a media report, the clubs in the failed Super League could face exclusion from club competitions of the European Football Union for up to two years as a punishment. According to information from the US broadcaster ESPN, UEFA has been advising the twelve clubs for ten days to agree to a lower sentence and to formally give up the plans for their own league. The European association did not want to comment on the report when asked.

According to ESPN, there is already an agreement between UEFA and seven clubs: Arsenal FC, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. This is imminent with Inter Milan.

No agreement has been reached with Juventus Turin, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and AC Milan. From his point of view, the quartet asked UEFA and the world association FIFA for permission for their own league and did not want to split off. The uncertain legal situation could lead to complicated processes with an uncertain outcome, according to the report. Should nine of the twelve clubs officially withdraw, the project of a Super League will be over due to their own statutes.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin indicated that he would proceed on a case-by-case basis when looking for a dialogue with the twelve clubs, but that each club would be penalized. “For me there is a clear difference between the English clubs and the other six,” he said. “They backed off first; they admitted they’d made a mistake.

On the night of April 19, the twelve top European clubs announced the establishment of a billion-dollar Super League. This would have been in direct competition with the UEFA Champions League. No club from the Bundesliga had joined the Super League. The project was to be financed by a major US bank. After massive resistance from associations, other clubs and fans, a majority of the clubs canceled their participation.
