EXCLUSIVE. Financing nuclear with Livret A money divides the French

The government plans to finance nuclear energy from the sums deposited in the Livret A. What do the French think? According to the survey carried out by the YouGov institute, 45% of those questioned say they are in favor of the idea of ​​financing nuclear energy (16% totally in favor and 29% somewhat in favour), 37% are opposed to this idea

Will the money from your Livret A soon be used to finance the construction of new nuclear reactors? If the question is not yet decided, this track is examined at the highest peak of the State, according to The echoes. Emmanuel Macron wants to revive nuclear power in France and thus plans to build six new next-generation reactors (EPR2). The cost of the operation is estimated by EDF at least 51.7 billion euros.

At present, the 375 billion euros deposited at the end of 2022 on the 55 million Livret A accounts owned by individuals is mainly used to finance social housing. But would the French be in favor of part of their woolen stockings being directed towards the financing of nuclear energy? Our partner, the Institute of YouGov pollasked them the question (1).

The French opinion divides on the nuclear issue

It thus emerges that 45% of those questioned say they are in favor the idea of ​​financing the construction of new reactors. On the other hand, 37% are against this idea and 17% don’t know. The results of this survey show a clear split in opinion on this sensitive nuclear issue.

On the political level, if the line should be favorable there, that is likely to make cough left, and in particular at the ecologists, opposed these new racteurs.

Recently, the head of the Caisse des Dépts et Consignations (CDC), the financial arm of the State which manages 60% of the funds deposited in Livret A savings accounts, told Parliament that this savings can finance the transformation of our energy production system. It is now up to the government to decide whether or not it wishes to use part of the money from Livret A to finance nuclear energy.

A misunderstanding of the use of money from Livret A

The survey carried out by YouGov was also the occasion to ask the French people if they know how the money from the Livret A is used today. For 30% of the respondents, the answer is no: they have no idea how their savings are used. 39% of them are aware that these funds can be used for the construction and rehabilitation of social housing, 20% that the money can be placed in financial assets and 12% are aware that the money can be used to loans for the construction or renovation of schools.
