Excursion to Naples, stronghold of design

Edit Napoli is the story of an encounter between Emilia Petruccelli and Domitilla Dardi, two women passionate about design. The first abandoned the world of finance to open a gallery-boutique in Rome specializing in auteur design, halfway between the limited series and the mass market, which remains the root of Italian design – and of European design in general. The second is an exhibition curator at the National Museum of XX Artse century, in Rome. Together, they founded Edit Napoli, a fair “attentive to production, favoring short and transparent chains that justify a certain price that we want to make understood through our exhibitions”, explains Domitilla Dardi.

“It seems important to us to exhibit contemporary design in a historic place to allow the past to project itself into the future. » Domitilla Dardi

Edit Napoli was born in Naples two years ago. “Here, the tradition of craftsmanship is still very much alive. The city was built on the connection between multiple cultures and countries, the coexistence of the noble and the poor. All of this nurtures a certain open-mindedness,” continues the curator. For this third edition, Edit Napoli returns to the convent of San Domenico Maggiore, in the heart of Naples, whose origins date back to the XIIIe century. “It seems important to us to exhibit contemporary design in a historic place to allow the past to project itself into the future. »

Here, no stands or white cubes, but rooms decorated with 17th century frescoese inhabited by furniture and objects. Far from being confined to this space, Edit Napoli extends to the whole city. Wooden works by Michele De Lucchi will be exhibited as contemporary ex-votos in the Santa Luciella Church, and Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek, “one of the greatest representatives of contemporary craftsmanship, which transcribes well what design can become”, will invest in the Made in Cloister foundation. Many other events will invite visitors to push open the doors of Neapolitan workshops, factories and other treasures.

A character guest house

“I like this place for two reasons: its personality and its location, in a popular district. Alessandra Calise Martuscelli welcomes us to a historic residence where the ancient spirit of Naples blends perfectly with contemporary decorative elements and Mediterranean craftsmanship sprinkled with a touch of French style. A very elegant demonstration of the aristocratic past of the city which also tells the link
which united Naples and the court of France. »
