Expiration date: When are beauty products no longer usable?

The bathroom cabinet overflows, there is chaos on the dressing table: high time to take a closer look. Because many of the cosmetic products that have accumulated over the years are probably no longer good and should be disposed of.

Since 2005, manufacturers of beauty products in Germany have been obliged to note the shelf life of their products on the packaging. This can be done in two ways: Either the symbol of the opened cream jar shows a number that represents the number of months over which the product can be used after opening. Or the manufacturer names a specific best-before date. This is mandatory if the product does not keep for more than 30 months.

Proper storage matters a lot

Why is it so important to consider the shelf life of cosmetic products? Over time, air and skin contact can cause bacteria to accumulate on brushes, creams etc., which may result in redness and impurities after use. Some products also contain ingredients that can spoil without outside influence. Proper storage is important. Means: Beauty products should generally be stored dry and protected from direct sunlight and strong temperature fluctuations.

Lumps in the mascara are a sign

Old-fashioned mascara cannot be overlooked. It is said that half a year after opening it can be used without hesitation. Then it should be disposed of. At the latest when it begins to form lumps. These are a result of frequent contact with oxygen and can indicate germs and bacteria in the product.

However, eyeshadow is more durable. If stored properly, the beauty product can be used in powder form for up to two years. The same applies to bronze and compact powder. Eye pencils hold up even longer. But be careful with liquid products. Cream eyeshadow should be used up within a year, liquid eyeliner is based on the half-life of mascara.

Change consistency and smell: Get rid of it!

Speaking of liquid: even foundation and concealer are not permanent. Both usually have a best before date of one year. However, this date should not be trusted blindly. As soon as the consistency of the beauty product changes, i.e. about two clearly recognizable layers form, it should no longer be used.

In most cases, a change in color or smell also indicates an advanced process of perishability. This envelope is particularly easy to recognize for lipstick that can easily be used for a whole year. If it smells different or takes on a crumbly consistency, it should be disposed of.

Pump dispensers offer protection

Particular care should be taken with face and eye creams. Since easily perishable ingredients are used in many of the products, they can usually be stored for less than a year after opening. The rule of thumb is that the fewer preservatives there are in a product, the faster it should be used up. Pump dispensers can be an advantage here. Since these allow less air and therefore less bacteria into the packaging, the product stays clean longer.
