At least 28 people have died in an explosion at a coal mine in Turkey.
More were injured and authorities believe dozens more miners are trapped underground.
The cause of the accident in the north of the country is still unclear.
The explosion in a mine in the Amasra district on the Black Sea happened about 300 meters below the surface, local media reports. Around 150 people took part in search and rescue operations. According to the Turkish Interior Ministry, 110 workers were in the mine at the time of the accident, 49 of them in the more vulnerable, deeper part.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Twitter that he would visit the scene of the accident on Saturday to “coordinate” rescue efforts. An investigation into the incident has been launched. The main opposition party, the social-democratic CHP, said the authorities had ignored a 2019 report by the Court of Auditors warning of the risk of a mine gas explosion at the mine.
Mine accidents have occurred in various places in Turkey in recent years. Among other things, due to a lack of safety regulations. In 2014, an explosion occurred at a coal mine in Manisa province. 301 people lost their lives.
