Explosive facts – asylum home Semmering: 58 refugees went into hiding

Since September last year, the Semming asylum center has been very busy. Around 300 refugees are currently accommodated in the house – 100 more than planned. Information from the Ministry of the Interior to the FPÖ also caused excitement that 58 people had already gone into hiding in a short time!

The situation is currently “relatively calm” in the small town of Spital am Semmering, as Vice Mayor Maria Fischer reports to “Krone”. But the mood could change very quickly when it gets warmer: “Because then there will be more asylum seekers on the street – and here I see problems coming up again,” the SPÖ politician does not hide her fears. “Currently 310 refugees are being accommodated, but the house is only designed for 200.” After “Haus Semmering” had been shut down for years, the Ministry of the Interior unlocked the accommodation again on September 21, 2021, which caused displeasure among the community leadership and the citizens . Now the Freedom Ministers of the Interior, Gerhard Karner, have checked out the situation in the asylum home. According to the response to the inquiry, a total of 666 asylum seekers were housed between October and December 2021 – the company cost 341,859 euros in the previous year. There were eight police operations by December, and three people were arrested. Particularly explosive: 58 refugees were reported as “unknown absent” – so they apparently went into hiding in the region. “A massive grievance!” rumbled National Council member Hannes Amesbauer.
