ExpressVPN has made the decision to urgently deactivate the split tunneling functionality. This is due to certain leaks of DNS requests, the latter not being redirected to the VPN’s dedicated servers, as should be the case. Explanations.
Launched in 2009, ExpressVPN is one of the pioneers on the market, and still constitutes an effective solution today (despite a certain austerity). With its domicile in the British Virgin Islands and its legislative framework favorable to respect for online privacy, ExpressVPN can notably apply a very strict no-log policy. Still, the VPN is not free from malfunctions, particularly via its split tunneling function.
Split tunneling disabled by ExpressVPN
Remember that split tunneling aims to pass part of the internet traffic through the encrypted VPN connection, and the other through the public network. The function allows (among other things) to save bandwidth and improve performance.
In an official blog post, ExpressVPN states: “ Our engineers quickly deployed a fix for version 12 of the Windows app, thanks to a tip from a user, on how the app handles DNS queries for users who have split tunneling enabled. “.
This is Attila Tomaschek, journalist at CNETwhich notified ExpressVPN of this bug, with DNS requests not being redirected to the VPN’s dedicated servers, as should be the case.
A bug present since… 2022
Note that the problem has been present since version 12.23.1 of ExpressVPN, launched in May 2022 and that the latter also concerns the very latest version, namely version 12.72.0, launched on February 7, 2024.
Even though the problem would not affect (according to ExpressVPN) more than 1% of users of version 12 of the application, the company preferred to completely deactivate split tunneling, in order to minimize the risks for customers. “ The feature will remain disabled while engineers investigate and resolve the issue », Promises ExpressVPN.
ExpressVPN explains that users of version 10 for Windows, as well as the app for other platforms, are not affected by this issue.
