For the first time in 400 years, northern bald ibises are breeding again in Switzerland. They had been extinct in this country since the 16th century.
The pair of birds nested on the windowsill of a Harley-Davidson garage in Rümlang.
In 2024, the first migrating waldrapp colony in Switzerland is to be founded near the Goldau animal park.
It is somewhat reminiscent of a cross between a vulture and an ibis: the northern ibis, which is one of the ibis birds, was also widespread in Switzerland up until the 16th century. Then the animals disappeared from Central Europe – because they were hunted for their meat. Today the northern bald ibis is considered to be in danger of extinction.
For a long time, the bird was only found in Morocco. Now, for the first time in 400 years, a couple is breeding in the wild in Switzerland: the ibis birds have chosen their nesting place on the windowsill of a Harley-Davidson garage in Rümlang, as reported by local television Tele Top.
A team led by biologist Johannes Fritz is committed to reintroducing the bird. The breeding pair are young birds that are breeding for the first time. He assesses the chicks’ chances of survival as intact.
