Extreme storms: these two regions of France are experiencing a level of alert never seen since 2014: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

For the first time since 2014, the French storm observatory, Keraunosplaced on Tuesday July 11, 2023, the north-east and the center-east of France on alert level 5, i.e. a “extreme thunderstorm risk”. And for good reason, storms that can be extremely violent are expected in these two regions, with gusts of wind that can reach more than 150 km/h during the day of Tuesday, July 11, 2023. Hailstorms are also announced, “which can reach 6 to 8 centimeters”while of “powerful microbursts are also expected in these storms”. Much of the northeast, should be then “swept”, by intense gusts of rain and stormy winds. Although extreme thunderstorms are forecast, their passage should be “brief on the great east”but on the other hand “more sustainable in the center-east”, accompanied by very strong gusts. Keraunos also announced a “risk of violent night storms of an infrequent level from the Pyrenees to the Alps with significant wind potential”.

An amber alert

Echoing Keraunos, Meteo France also placed the same two regions, in “Storm Orange Vigilance” announcing important cloud movements over 22 departments from the Massif Central to Alsace. “The storms are moving rapidly east and northeast during the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, sweeping the departments placed in orange vigilance”, can we read. In addition, Météo France has announced the placement of nine departments in orange vigilance, due to an announced heat wave, in the afternoon of Tuesday July 11, 2023. The departments concerned are: Ain, Alpes-de- Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes, Côte-d’Or, Isère, Jura, Loire, Rhône and Saône-et-Loire. Although cloudier weather is forecast for the whole country, strong heat “over the East before a marked stormy degradation”are to be expected.
