Eyelid surgery to liposuction: Because of the corona crisis, cosmetic surgery is in demand like never before

The corona crisis has consequences for all areas of life. The effects of the pandemic can also be observed in the beauty industry.

Have the training looped due to the corona lockdown or involuntarily drawn attention to the unloved laugh lines because of the mask requirement? For around four months now, the virus has had a firm grip on our everyday life – and with it the way we perceive each other and ourselves. This is also shown by the current trends in the field of cosmetic surgery, which were published by the VDÄPC (Association of German Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) at the annual press conference.

The pitfalls of the home office

For some people, going to work every day of the week is practically the only form of sporting activity. But even that fell flat for most workers because of the lockdown, and sometimes there was also a healthier diet than before the pandemic. The result: "The interest in liposuction has increased significantly since the corona pandemic in women and men," said Dr. med. Murat Dagdelen.

Advantages and disadvantages of the mask requirement

Mouth and nose protection, which has become everyday life in public life in recent months, covers a large part of the face. But the masks also direct attention to very specific areas. The small wrinkles around the eyes, for example, are emphasized too much by the mask requirement, many people seem to think. "Corona eyelid surgery is booming," reports Dr. med. Karl Schuhmann.

But the mask requirement also has something good, at least for all those who already had a lip operation anyway: "Lip corrections can lead to bruises, redness or swelling for a short time. A mask conceals swelling after a lip correction", Schuhmann continues.

Concern on the job market?

In addition to worrying about their own health and that of loved ones, people have been concerned about unemployment since Corona. In the beauty sector too, this could also lead to "the desire for a fresh look" for increased treatments, for example with hyaluron and botulinum toxin, or botox for short. "Many patients want to be competitive in the changing job market," says Prof. Dr. med. Dennis von Heimburg, specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery and president of VDÄPC.

In all cases, however, and even more so in Corona times: "Health comes before beauty". Therefore, everyone is advised to take advantage of the possibility of online advice before any kind of intervention. "It is not quantity but quality that counts," says Heimburg.
