McLaren driver Lando Norris won the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, marking the 18th round of the Formula One season. The Briton beat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by more than 20 seconds at the Marina Bay street circuit. The win saw Norris close the gap to Verstappen in the drivers’ championship by seven points, taking the total to 52 with six races remaining. However, he was robbed of the point for fastest lap by Australian Daniel Ricciardo.
Lando Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri also put in a great performance, overtaking the Mercedes. And thus took third place, giving McLaren a double podium. “It was an incredible race, I had some hot and tense moments, but otherwise I controlled the race well. The car was flying today (Sunday)! With Oscar’s (Piastri) podium, it’s a very good day for the team,” reacted Norris.
Max Verstappen limits the damage
Even though he did not win for the eighth consecutive time, Max Verstappen ensured the essential by taking second place which allows him to limit the damage before a break of almost four weeks. The Dutchman expressed his relative satisfaction: “After a complicated start to the weekend, finishing second is a good thing even if we are not happy not to win”.
George Russell (Mercedes) took fourth place, resisting well the attacks of Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), who delivered a solid race despite starting in ninth position. Lewis Hamilton, seven-time world champion, finished sixth, victim of a poorly managed strategy by Mercedes which made him stop too early. The top 10 was completed by Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Nico Hülkenberg (Haas) and Sergio Pérez (Red Bull).
