Frenchman Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) won the Italian Grand Prix solo on Sunday 30 May, completing his third MotoGP victory this season. The driver now leads the world championship by 24 points after six rounds.
Quartararo dedicated his success to Swiss Jason Dupasquier, who died on Sunday after an accident during qualifying for Moto3 – the third category of racing, behind MotoGP and Moto2. The Frenchman sported the number and name of his “Friend” on his helmet and draped himself with the Swiss flag rather than the French flag when he got off his motorcycle, then taking him to the podium.
Johann Zarco at the foot of the podium
Portuguese Miguel Oliveira and Spaniard Joan Mir (Suzuki) accompany him to the podium in the order in which they crossed the line, after having been penalized one place after another for having passed the runway limits.
The second Frenchman Johann Zarco (Ducati-Pramac), second until 16e lap, saved the furniture to finish fourth despite his rear seat damaged following a collision with the Italian Enea Bastianini (Ducati-Avintia) during the warm-up lap.
The former Quartararo’s runner-up in the drivers’ standings, the Italian Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati), suffered a setback on the Mugello circuit when he fell on the second lap, while he was in the lead. That’s when “El Diablo” (the nickname given to Quartararo) took the lead for two rounds of brawl with Zarco before gradually widening his gap. The next race will take place in Catalonia, starting next week.
