The right scincare routine is of elementary importance in order to maintain the skin barrier and to conjure up an even complexion. This includes thorough cleaning and extensive care during the day and at night. Above all, the most suitable cream and sun protection for you are important. So, that would be the basics. But if you want to intensify the care a little, you can use facial serums. With their particularly effective active ingredients, they can specifically build up and protect the skin. But which serum is best for your complexion? We bring light into the new serum jungle.

Choosing the right ingredients for a serum can get pretty complicated. A precise skin analysis by a dermatologist or beautician would be useful to know in advance where your skin needs more support in building up. Five different ingredients that are now available in every drugstore and every cosmetics shop are hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramide, vitamin C and retinol. We explain to you what exactly is behind the miracle cure.

Hyaluronic acid for moisture

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that already occurs in our body – in the connective tissue. It binds water in the body, which is why it acts as a moisture reservoir for us. For example, the hyaluron in the body also supports the movement of the joints and the moisture in the eyes. It has a tightening effect on the skin

Since the body breaks down hyaluronic acid, it has to build it up again and again. Over the years, however, the body’s own function decreases. In addition to collagen degradation, which also occurs with age, this process causes the skin to lose elasticity and wrinkles to form.

It is therefore actually advisable to support the skin with hyaluronic care from an early age, ideally even from the age of 20.

Against blemishes and pigmentation with a niacinamide serum

Niacinamide is a vitamin B3 derivative and thus a form of vitamin B3. It has been proven to have a positive effect on the skin: firstly, it regulates the skin’s sebum production, which can help mattify the T-zone of the face. On the other hand, the vitamin has an antibacterial effect and thus prevents impurities. A niacinamide serum can also help for problems with facial pigmentation, as the vitamin B3 derivative inhibits the synthesis of melanin. At the same time, it ensures a radiant complexion and moisturizes.

In order for niacinamide to work, you should make sure that the serum has a concentration of at least 2 to 5 percent – however, too high a concentration is not good either, as it can cause skin redness.

It is important to know about a niacinamide serum: In combination with vitamin C, niacinamide can convert to niacin (nicotinic acid) and cause the skin to become extremely red. To avoid this, you should wait half an hour between applying the two products so that the pH of the skin can level off again.

Ceramides to protect the skin’s protective barrier

Ceramides are lipids that are found in our skin and even make up 50 percent of the top layer of skin. They are fundamental to a healthy skin barrier. Additional care with ceramides is effective because we can support the skin in maintaining the skin’s protective barrier. A serum containing ceramide also provides more moisture, as it prevents the skin from losing water. The serum works particularly well in combination with other substances that support the skin barrier – such as niaciamide or retinol. Over the years, the body’s own formation of ceramides decreases, which is why a serum can help. Ceramides are among the most important anti-aging ingredients.

Vitamin C for firming and against wrinkles

Vitamin C is essential for the body to survive. We absorb it through food, but we can also provide our skin with it through external care. A vitamin C serum is the remedy for wrinkles and for anti-aging, as it stimulates collagen production in the long term, tightens connective tissue and plumps up wrinkles. It has an antioxidant effect and protects the skin from harmful environmental influences and can therefore also act against inflammation and pimple marks. It should be applied once or twice a day as the body cannot store it.

Retinol to strengthen collagen formation and tissue

Although retinol is not an endogenous substance, we usually ingest it in the form of vitamin A and provitamin A through foods such as carrots, oranges or meat. In addition, it can also enter the body through the skin and strengthen it. Retinol is particularly helpful for enzyme activity as well as collagen formation. These are stimulated by the retinol and the skin appears firmer and the tissue is padded.

The retinol serum should not be dosed too high. A maximum of 0.3 percent should be included so that the skin does not redden or become irritated.

However, it is important to know that retinol has a photosensitizing effect – the top layer of skin is removed. As a result, the skin loses sun protection. The retinol should either only be used in the evening or extra strong sun protection should be guaranteed with sunscreen.
